  48. ## Purpose
  49. The goal of this project is to make the easiest, fastest, and most
  50. painless way of setting up a self-hosted Git service.
  51. Using Go, this can be done with an independent binary distribution across
  52. **all platforms** which Go supports, including Linux, macOS, and Windows
  53. on x86, amd64, ARM and PowerPC architectures.
  54. Want to try it before doing anything else?
  55. Do it [with the online demo](https://try.gitea.io/)!
  56. This project has been
  57. [forked](https://blog.gitea.io/2016/12/welcome-to-gitea/) from
  58. [Gogs](https://gogs.io) since 2016.11 but changed a lot.
  59. ## Building
  60. From the root of the source tree, run:
  61. TAGS="bindata" make build
  62. or if SQLite support is required:
  63. TAGS="bindata sqlite sqlite_unlock_notify" make build
  64. The `build` target is split into two sub-targets:
  65. - `make backend` which requires [Go 1.16](https://golang.org/dl/) or greater.
  66. - `make frontend` which requires [Node.js LTS](https://nodejs.org/en/download/) or greater and Internet connectivity to download npm dependencies.
  67. When building from the official source tarballs which include pre-built frontend files, the `frontend` target will not be triggered, making it possible to build without Node.js and Internet connectivity.
  68. Parallelism (`make -j <num>`) is not supported.
  69. More info: https://docs.gitea.io/en-us/install-from-source/
  70. ## Using
  71. ./gitea web
  72. NOTE: If you're interested in using our APIs, we have experimental
  73. support with [documentation](https://try.gitea.io/api/swagger).
  74. ## Contributing
  75. Expected workflow is: Fork -> Patch -> Push -> Pull Request
  76. NOTES:
  77. 1. **YOU MUST READ THE [CONTRIBUTORS GUIDE](CONTRIBUTING.md) BEFORE STARTING TO WORK ON A PULL REQUEST.**
  78. 2. If you have found a vulnerability in the project, please write privately to **security@gitea.io**. Thanks!
  79. ## Translating
  80. Translations are done through Crowdin. If you want to translate to a new language ask one of the managers in the Crowdin project to add a new language there.
  81. You can also just create an issue for adding a language or ask on discord on the #translation channel. If you need context or find some translation issues, you can leave a comment on the string or ask on Discord. For general translation questions there is a section in the docs. Currently a bit empty but we hope fo fill it as questions pop up.
