  80. <h2 id="enhancements">Enhancements in Vaadin @version-minor@</h2>
  81. <p>Vaadin @version-minor@ includes many major and minor
  82. enhancements. Below is a list of the most notable changes:</p>
  83. <ul>
  84. <li>Column reordering using drag and drop in Grid</li>
  85. <li>Column hiding in Grid</li>
  86. <li>Row details support in Grid</li>
  87. <li>JSR 356 WebSocket support has been refactored to improve compatibility with Wildfly and WebLogic</li>
  88. </ul>
  89. <p>
  90. For enhancements introduced in Vaadin 7.4, see the <a
  91. href="http://vaadin.com/download/release/7.4/7.4.0/release-notes.html">Release
  92. Notes for Vaadin 7.4.0</a>.
  93. </p>
  94. <h3 id="incompatible">Incompatible or Behavior-altering Changes in @version-minor@</h3>
  95. <ul>
  96. <li>The push path has been changed from /PUSH/ to /PUSH to be compatible with JSR 356.</li>
  97. <li>Widgetset files and other pre-compressed resources are sent as gzip to compatible browsers.
  98. This may interfere with custom response compression solutions that do not respect the Content-Encoding response header.</li>
  99. <li>Unused methods related to the "out of sync" message have been removed from SystemMessages class.</li>
  100. <li>All notifications use the WAI-ARIA alert role to be compatible with Jaws</li>
  101. </ul>
  102. <h3 id="knownissues">Known Issues and Limitations</h3>
  103. <ul>
  104. <li>Drag'n'drop in a Table doesn't work on touch devices running
  105. Internet Explorer (Windows Phone, Surface)
  106. (<a href="http://dev.vaadin.com/ticket/13737">#13737</a>)
  107. </li>
  108. <li><p>It is currently not possible to specify <tt>font-size</tt>
  109. as <tt>em</tt> or <tt>%</tt>, or layout component sizes
  110. with <tt>em</tt> (<a
  111. href="http://dev.vaadin.com/ticket/10634">#10634</a>).</p><p>This
  112. does not apply to Valo, but using em sizes to size layouts is discouraged,
  113. because it results in fractional component sizes in many cases, which
  114. might cause unwanted 1px gaps between components.</p>
  115. </li>
  116. <li>Up-to-date information about configuration needed for push and compatibility issues are available in
  117. <a href="https://vaadin.com/wiki/-/wiki/Main/Configuring+push+for+your+environment">this wiki page.</a>
  118. <br />
  119. The most prominent limitations are:
  120. <ul>
  121. <li>HTTP proxies can prevent push requests from working
  122. properly. To mitigate the issues, avoid using streaming
  123. and configure your proxy so it allows response headers
  124. to pass through before the whole response is received.
  125. <a href="http://dev.vaadin.com/ticket/17075">#17075</a>
  126. should make long-polling work seamlessly with all proxies.
  127. </li>
  128. <li>HTTP session can not be invalidated while using
  129. push over websockets on Tomcat 7 (<a href="http://dev.vaadin.com/ticket/11721">#11721</a>)
  130. </li>
  131. <li>Cookies are not available while using websockets (<a
  132. href="http://dev.vaadin.com/ticket/11808">#11808</a>)
  133. </li>
  134. <li>Push is currently not supported in portals (See <a
  135. href="http://dev.vaadin.com/ticket/11493">#11493</a>)
  136. </li>
  137. </ul>
  138. </li>
  139. </ul>
  140. <h2 id="vaadin">Vaadin Installation</h2>
  141. <p>
  142. <b>Vaadin</b> is a Java framework for building modern web
  143. applications that look great, perform well and make you and
  144. your users happy. <b>Vaadin</b> is available under the
  145. Apache License, Version 2.0 (see the
  146. <tt>license.html</tt>
  147. in the Vaadin ZIP or JAR package).
  148. </p>
  149. <p>
  150. The easiest ways to install <b>Vaadin</b> are:
  151. </p>
  152. <ul>
  153. <li>If using Maven, define it as a dependency or use
  154. any of the available archetypes (only <tt>vaadin-application</tt>
  155. is available for Vaadin 7 at the time of this release)
  156. to create a new project
  157. </li>
  158. <li>If using Eclipse, use the Vaadin Plugin for
  159. Eclipse, which automatically downloads the Vaadin
  160. libraries.
  161. </li>
  162. </ul>
  163. <p>
  164. It is also available as a ZIP package downloadable from <a
  165. href="http://vaadin.com/download">Vaadin Download
  166. page</a>.
  167. </p>
  168. <h3 id="package">Package Contents</h3>
  169. <p>Inside the ZIP installation package you will find:</p>
  170. <ul>
  171. <li>Separate server-side (<tt>vaadin-server</tt>) and
  172. client-side (<tt>vaadin-client</tt>, <tt>vaadin-client-compiler</tt>)
  173. development libraries
  174. </li>
  175. <li>Precompiled widget set (<tt>vaadin-client-compiled</tt>)
  176. for server-side development
  177. </li>
  178. <li>Shared library (<tt>vaadin-shared</tt>) for both
  179. server- and client-side libraries
  180. </li>
  181. <li>Built-in themes (<tt>vaadin-themes</tt>)
  182. </li>
  183. <li>Dependency libraries provided under the <tt>lib/</tt>
  184. folder
  185. </li>
  186. </ul>
  187. <p>
  188. See the
  189. <tt>README.TXT</tt>
  190. in the installation package for detailed information about
  191. the package contents. <a href="http://vaadin.com/book">Book
  192. of Vaadin</a> (for Vaadin 7) gives more detailed
  193. instructions.
  194. </p>
  195. <p>
  196. For server-side development, copy the
  197. <tt>vaadin-server</tt>
  198. ,
  199. <tt>vaadin-client-compiled</tt>
  200. ,
  201. <tt>vaadin-shared</tt>
  202. , and
  203. <tt>vaadin-themes</tt>
  204. from the main folder and the dependencies from the
  205. <tt>lib</tt>
  206. folder to the
  207. <tt>WEB-INF/lib</tt>
  208. folder of your Vaadin project. (The
  209. <tt>vaadin-client-compiled</tt>
  210. is necessary if you do not wish to compile the widget set by
  211. your own, which you need to do if you use almost any add-on
  212. components.)
  213. </p>
  214. <h4 id="package.updates">Updates to the Packaging</h4>
  215. <p>
  216. Since Vaadin 7.2.0, the old vaadin-theme-compiler has been moved into
  217. a separate project and renamed to vaadin-sass-compiler. It is now included
  218. along with the other 3rd party dependencies in the ZIP package.
  219. </p>
  220. <p>
  221. For pure client-side development, you only need the
  222. <tt>vaadin-client</tt>
  223. and
  224. <tt>vaadin-client-compiler</tt>
  225. JARs, which should be put to a non-deployed project library
  226. folder, such as
  227. <tt>lib</tt>
  228. . You also need them if you compile the widget set for any
  229. reason, such as using Vaadin add-ons, or create new
  230. server-side components integrated with client-side widgets.
  231. </p>
  232. <h2 id="migrating">Migrating from Vaadin 6</h2>
  233. <p>
  234. All Vaadin 6 applications need some changes when migrating
  235. to Vaadin 7. The most obvious changes are in the
  236. application/window API and require extending either <b>UI</b>
  237. or <b>UI.LegacyApplication</b> instead of <b>Application</b>.
  238. A detailed list of migration changes are given in the <a
  239. href="https://vaadin.com/wiki/-/wiki/Main/Migrating+from+Vaadin+6+to+Vaadin+7">Vaadin
  240. 7 Migration Guide</a>.
  241. </p>
  242. <p>Any custom client-side widgets need to be ported to use
  243. the new client-server communication API, or the Vaadin 6
  244. compatibility API.</p>
  245. <p>
  246. Vaadin 6 add-ons (ones that contain widgets) do not work in
  247. Vaadin 7 - please check the add-ons in <a
  248. href="http://vaadin.com/directory/">Vaadin Directory</a>
  249. for Vaadin 7 support.
  250. </p>
  251. <h2 id="dependencies">Vaadin @version@ Dependencies</h2>
  252. <p>When using Maven, Ivy, Gradle, or other dependency
  253. management system, all Vaadin dependencies are downloaded
  254. automatically. This is also the case when using the Vaadin
  255. Plugin for Eclipse.</p>
  256. <p>
  257. The Vaadin ZIP installation package includes the
  258. dependencies in the
  259. <tt>lib</tt>
  260. subfolder. These need to be copied to the
  261. <tt>WEB-INF/lib</tt>
  262. folder of the web application that uses Vaadin.
  263. </p>
  264. <p>
  265. The dependencies are listed in the <a href="license.html">Licensing
  266. description</a>. Some are explicit dependencies packaged and
  267. distributed as separate JARs, while some are included inside
  268. other libraries.
  269. </p>
  270. <h3>Bean Validation</h3>
  271. <p>
  272. If you use the bean validation feature in Vaadin 7, you need
  273. a Bean Validation API implementation. You need to install
  274. the implementation JAR in the
  275. <tt>WEB-INF/lib</tt>
  276. directory of the web application that uses validation.
  277. </p>
  278. <h2 id="upgrading">Upgrading to Vaadin @version-minor@</h2>
  279. <p>When upgrading from an earlier Vaadin version, you must:
  280. </p>
  281. <ul>
  282. <li>Recompile your classes using the new Vaadin
  283. version. Binary compatibility is only guaranteed for
  284. maintenance releases of Vaadin.</li>
  285. <li>Unless using the precompiled widget set, recompile
  286. your widget set using the new Vaadin version.</li>
  287. </ul>
  288. <p>Remember also to refresh the project in your IDE to
  289. ensure that the new version of everything is in use.</p>
  290. <p>
  291. By using the "
  292. <tt>?debug</tt>
  293. " URL parameter, you can verify that the version of the
  294. servlet, the theme, and the widget set all match.
  295. </p>
  296. <p>
  297. <b>Eclipse</b> users should always check if there is a new
  298. version of the Eclipse Plug-in available. The Eclipse
  299. Plug-in can be used to update the Vaadin version in the
  300. project (Project properties &raquo; Vaadin).
  301. </p>
  302. <p>
  303. <b>Maven</b> users should update the Vaadin dependency
  304. version in the
  305. <tt>pom.xml</tt>
  306. unless it is defined as
  307. <tt>LATEST</tt>
  308. . You must also ensure that the GWT dependency uses the
  309. correct version and recompile your project and your widget
  310. set.
  311. </p>
  312. <p>
  313. <b>Liferay and other portal</b> users must install the
  314. Vaadin libraries in
  315. <t>ROOT/WEB-INF/lib/</b> in the portal (and remove a
  316. possibly obsolete older <tt>vaadin.jar</tt>). Additionally,
  317. the contents of the <tt>vaadin-client-compiled</tt> and <tt>vaadin-themes</tt>
  318. must be extracted to the <tt>ROOT/html/VAADIN</tt> directory
  319. in the Liferay installation. If your portal uses custom
  320. widgets, you can use <a
  321. href="http://vaadin.com/directory#addon/liferay-control-panel-plugin-for-vaadin:vaadin">
  322. Liferay Control Panel for Vaadin</a> for easy widget set compilation.</t>

  326. </h4>
  327. </h2>
  328. <p>The following instructions and limitations apply when you
  329. run a Vaadin application under the Google App Engine.</p>
  330. <ul>
  331. <li>
  332. <p>
  333. Applications must use <b>GAEVaadinServlet</b>
  334. instead of <b>VaadinServlet</b> in

  336. .
  337. </p>
  338. </li>
  339. <li>
  340. <p>
  341. Session support must be enabled in
  342. <tt>appengine-web.xml</tt>
  343. :

  346. <li>
  347. <p>Avoid using the session for storage, usual App
  348. Engine limitations apply (no synchronization, that
  349. is, unreliable).</p>
  350. </li>
  351. <li>
  352. <p>
  353. Vaadin uses memcache for mutex, the key is of the

  357. </p>
  358. </li>
  359. <li>
  360. <p>
