  82. <li>AbstractDateField now supports formatting of time zone information</li>
  83. <li>PushState based navigation support</li>
  84. <li>VaadinSession is now stored to the HTTP session at the end of each access to support clustering</li>
  85. <li>Grid WAI-ARIA support has been improved (aria-sort added)</li>
  86. <li>Client side ErrorLevel support</li>
  87. <li>VaadinService, VaadinServlet and VaadinServletService have protected no-args constructors to make DI integrations simpler</li>
  88. </ul>
  89. </p>
  90. <p>

  106. <li><tt>Embedded</tt> is not a <tt>LegacyComponent</tt> anymore.</li>
  107. <li><tt>Notification</tt> method <tt>show</tt> returns <tt>Notification</tt>, instead of <tt>void</tt>.</li>

  110. <ul>
  111. <li>Drag'n'drop in a Table doesn't work on touch devices running
  112. Internet Explorer (Windows Phone, Surface)
  113. (<a href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework/issues/5170">#5170</a>)
  114. </li>
  115. <li>Payload based drop criteria do not work on IE11 - use criteria scripts if IE11 support of drop validation is required</li>
  116. <li>Specifying layout sizes using <tt>em</tt> is currently discouraged, because it results in fractional
  117. components sizes in many cases, which might cause unwanted 1px gaps between components.
  118. </li>
  119. <li>Up-to-date information about configuration needed for push and compatibility issues are available in
  120. <a href="https://vaadin.com/wiki/-/wiki/Main/Configuring+push+for+your+environment">this wiki page.</a>
  121. <br />
  122. The most prominent limitations are:
  123. <ul>
  124. <li>Push is currently not supported in portals (See <a
  125. href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework/issues/3741">#3741</a>)
  126. </li>
  127. <li>Transport mode WEBSOCKET does not support invalidating the session on Tomcat 7,
  128. nor setting cookies for the session. The new transport mode WEBSOCKET_XHR can be
  129. used to bypass these limitations.
  130. <br />
  131. See tickets <a href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework/issues/3911">#3911</a> and
  132. <a href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework/issues/3861">#3861</a>
  133. </li>
  134. </ul>
  135. </li>
  136. <li>The Maven GWT compilation for <tt>Vaadin7WidgetSet</tt> requires at least 1G of memory, when using the <tt>vaadin-client-compability</tt> package. If compiled inside Eclipse, possibly even more.</li>
  137. </ul>
  138. <h2 id="starting">Getting started with Vaadin Framework</h2>
  139. <p>
  140. <b>Vaadin Framework</b> is a Java framework for building modern web
  141. applications that look great, perform well and make you and
  142. your users happy. <b>The Framework</b> is available under the
  143. Apache License, Version 2.0 (see the
  144. <tt>license.html</tt>
  145. in the Vaadin Framework ZIP package).
  146. </p>
  147. <p>
  148. The easiest ways to start using <b>Vaadin Framework</b> are:
  149. </p>
  150. <ul>
  151. <li><strong>Maven dependency.</strong>If using Maven, define it as a dependency or use
  152. any of the available archetypes to create a new project. More information at
  153. <a href="https://vaadin.com/maven">https://vaadin.com/maven</a>
  154. </li>
  155. <li><strong>IDE Plugins.</strong>If using Eclipse, use the
  156. <a href="http://vaadin.com/eclipse">Vaadin Plugin for Eclipse</a>, which automatically
  157. downloads the Framework libraries. For NetBeans 8.0 and 7.4, use the
  158. <a href="http://plugins.netbeans.org/plugin/50531/vaadin-plug-in-for-netbeans">official Vaadin plugin</a>
  159. that provides Maven based wizards and code completion support for Vaadin Framework based development.
  160. </li>
  161. </ul>
  162. <p>
  163. Vaadin Framework is also available as a ZIP package downloadable from <a
  164. href="http://vaadin.com/download">Vaadin Download
  165. page</a>.
  166. </p>
  167. <h3 id="package">Package Contents</h3>
  168. <p>Inside the ZIP installation package you will find:</p>
  169. <ul>
  170. <li>Separate server-side (<tt>vaadin-server</tt>) and
  171. client-side (<tt>vaadin-client</tt>, <tt>vaadin-client-compiler</tt>)
  172. development libraries
  173. </li>
  174. <li>Precompiled widget set (<tt>vaadin-client-compiled</tt>)
  175. for server-side development
  176. </li>
  177. <li>Shared library (<tt>vaadin-shared</tt>) for both
  178. server- and client-side libraries
  179. </li>
  180. <li>Valo theme (the only inbuilt theme) (<tt>vaadin-themes</tt>)
  181. </li>
  182. <li>Dependency libraries provided under the <tt>lib/</tt>
  183. folder
  184. </li>
  185. <li>Vaadin 7 compatible classes for server-side (<tt>vaadin-compatibility-server</tt>,
  186. <tt>vaadin-compatibility-shared</tt>), client-side (<tt>vaadin-compatibility-client</tt>) and themes (<tt>vaadin-compatibility-themes</tt>)
  187. </li>
  188. </ul>
  189. <p>
  190. See the
  191. <tt>README.TXT</tt>
  192. in the installation package for detailed information about
  193. the package contents.
  194. </p>
  195. <p>
  196. For server-side development, copy the
  197. <tt>vaadin-server</tt>
  198. ,
  199. <tt>vaadin-client-compiled</tt>
  200. ,
  201. <tt>vaadin-shared</tt>
  202. , and
  203. <tt>vaadin-themes</tt>
  204. from the main folder and the dependencies from the
  205. <tt>lib</tt>
  206. folder to the
  207. <tt>WEB-INF/lib</tt>
  208. folder of your Vaadin project. (The
  209. <tt>vaadin-client-compiled</tt>
  210. is necessary if you do not wish to compile the widget set by
  211. your own, which you need to do if you use almost any add-on
  212. components.)
  213. </p>
  214. <h2 id="migrating">Migrating from Vaadin Framework 7.7</h2>
  215. <p>
  216. Most Vaadin Framework 7 applications need some changes when migrating
  217. to Vaadin Framework 8. In addition to updating dependencies, all references to
  218. Framework 7 style data binding and components using it need to be
  219. updated either to use new Framework 8 style data binding or to use the
  220. compatibility versions in separate packages.
  221. </p>
  222. <p>
  223. Vaadin Framework 7 compatible versions of the old data binding API and
  224. components (with the exception of Form) are available in the package
  225. com.vaadin.v7 in modules vaadin-compatibility-server,
  226. vaadin-compatibility-shared etc. that can be used instead of
  227. vaadin-server, vaadin-shared etc. The package
  228. vaadin-compatibility-client-compiled contains the widgetset
  229. <tt>com.vaadin.v7.Vaadin7WidgetSet</tt> which can be used instead of
  230. <tt>DefaultWidgetSet</tt>. Please note that the rename to com.vaadin.v7
  231. has only been applied to classes that are only relevant for the
  232. compatibility modules. Some classes have also been renamed while still
  233. being part of the non-compatibility modules.
  234. </p>
  235. <p>
  236. All applications using either <tt>Reindeer</tt>, <tt>Runo</tt>, <tt>Chameleon</tt> or <tt>Base</tt> theme must include the <tt>vaadin-compability-themes</tt> package.
  237. </p>
  238. <p>
  239. There is a <a href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework8-migration-tool/">
  240. migration tool</a> which helps with some of the migration steps.
  241. </p>
  242. <p>
  243. Some Vaadin Framework 7 add-ons do not work in version 8 - please check the add-ons in <a
  244. href="http://vaadin.com/directory/">Vaadin Directory</a>
  245. for Framework version 8 support.
  246. </p>
  247. <h3 id="upgrading">Common Upgrade Steps</h3>
  248. <p>Always when upgrading from an earlier Vaadin Framework version, you
  249. must:</p>
  250. <ul>
  251. <li>Recompile your classes using the new Framework
  252. version. Binary compatibility is only guaranteed for
  253. maintenance releases of Framework.</li>
  254. <li>Unless using the precompiled widget set, recompile
  255. your widget set using the new Framework version.</li>
  256. </ul>
  257. <p>Remember also to refresh the project in your IDE to
  258. ensure that the new version of everything is in use.</p>
  259. <p>
  260. By using the "
  261. <tt>?debug</tt>
  262. " URL parameter, you can verify that the version of the
  263. servlet, the theme, and the widget set all match.
  264. </p>
  265. <p>
  266. <b>Eclipse</b> users should always check if there is a new
  267. version of the Eclipse Plug-in available.
  268. </p>
  269. <p>
  270. <b>Maven</b> users should update the Vaadin Framework dependency
  271. version in the
  272. <tt>pom.xml</tt>
  273. .
  274. </p>
  275. <h2 id="dependencies">Vaadin Framework @version@ Dependencies</h2>
  276. <p>When using Maven, Ivy, Gradle, or other dependency
  277. management system, all Framework dependencies are downloaded
  278. automatically. This is also the case when using the Vaadin
  279. Plugin for Eclipse.</p>
  280. <p>
  281. The Vaadin Framework ZIP installation package includes the
  282. dependencies in the
  283. <tt>lib</tt>
  284. subfolder. These need to be copied to the
  285. <tt>WEB-INF/lib</tt>
  286. folder of the web application that uses Vaadin Framework.
  287. </p>
  288. <p>
  289. The dependencies are listed in the <a href="license.html">Licensing
  290. description</a>. Some are explicit dependencies packaged and
  291. distributed as separate JARs, while some are included inside
  292. other libraries.
  293. </p>
  294. <h3>Bean Validation</h3>
  295. <p>
  296. If you use the bean validation feature, you need
  297. a Bean Validation API implementation. You need to install
  298. the implementation JAR in the
  299. <tt>WEB-INF/lib</tt>
  300. directory of the web application that uses validation.
  301. </p>
  302. <h2 id="supportedversions">Supported Technologies</h2>
  303. <p>
  304. Vaadin Framework 8 is compatible with <b>Java 8</b> and newer. Vaadin Framework
  305. 8 is especially supported on the following <b>operating
  306. systems</b>:
  307. </p>
  308. <ul>
  309. <li>Windows</li>
  310. <li>Linux</li>
  311. <li>Mac OS X</li>
  312. </ul>
  313. <p>
  314. Vaadin Framework 8 requires <b>Java Servlet API 3.0</b> but also
  315. supports later versions and should work with any Java
  316. application server that conforms to the standard. The
  317. following <b>application servers</b> are supported:
  318. </p>
  319. <ul id="supportedservers">
