  102. <h3 id="knownissues">Known Issues and Limitations</h3>
  103. <ul>
  104. <li>Drag'n'drop in a Table doesn't work on touch devices running
  105. Internet Explorer (Windows Phone, Surface)
  106. (<a href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework/issues/5170">#5170</a>)
  107. </li>
  108. <li>Payload based drop criteria do not work on IE11 - use criteria scripts if IE11 support of drop validation is required</li>
  109. <li>Specifying layout sizes using <tt>em</tt> is currently discouraged, because it results in fractional
  110. components sizes in many cases, which might cause unwanted 1px gaps between components.
  111. </li>
  112. <li>Up-to-date information about configuration needed for push and compatibility issues are available in
  113. <a href="https://vaadin.com/wiki/-/wiki/Main/Configuring+push+for+your+environment">this wiki page.</a>
  114. <br />
  115. The most prominent limitations are:
  116. <ul>
  117. <li>Push is currently not supported in portals (See <a
  118. href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework/issues/3741">#3741</a>)
  119. </li>
  120. <li>Transport mode WEBSOCKET does not support invalidating the session on Tomcat 7,
  121. nor setting cookies for the session. The new transport mode WEBSOCKET_XHR can be
  122. used to bypass these limitations.
  123. <br />
  124. See tickets <a href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework/issues/3911">#3911</a> and
  125. <a href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework/issues/3861">#3861</a>
  126. </li>
  127. </ul>
  128. </li>
  129. <li>The Maven GWT compilation for <tt>Vaadin7WidgetSet</tt> requires at least 1G of memory, when using the <tt>vaadin-client-compability</tt> package. If compiled inside Eclipse, possibly even more.</li>
  130. </ul>
  131. <h2 id="starting">Getting started with Vaadin Framework</h2>
  132. <p>
  133. <b>Vaadin Framework</b> is a Java framework for building modern web
  134. applications that look great, perform well and make you and
  135. your users happy. <b>The Framework</b> is available under the
  136. Apache License, Version 2.0 (see the
  137. <tt>license.html</tt>
  138. in the Vaadin Framework ZIP package).
  139. </p>
  140. <p>
  141. The easiest ways to start using <b>Vaadin Framework</b> are:
  142. </p>
  143. <ul>
  144. <li><strong>Maven dependency.</strong>If using Maven, define it as a dependency or use
  145. any of the available archetypes to create a new project. More information at
  146. <a href="https://vaadin.com/maven">https://vaadin.com/maven</a>
  147. </li>
  148. <li><strong>IDE Plugins.</strong>If using Eclipse, use the
  149. <a href="http://vaadin.com/eclipse">Vaadin Plugin for Eclipse</a>, which automatically
  150. downloads the Framework libraries. For NetBeans 8.0 and 7.4, use the
  151. <a href="http://plugins.netbeans.org/plugin/50531/vaadin-plug-in-for-netbeans">official Vaadin plugin</a>
  152. that provides Maven based wizards and code completion support for Vaadin Framework based development.
  153. </li>
  154. </ul>
  155. <p>
  156. Vaadin Framework is also available as a ZIP package downloadable from <a
  157. href="http://vaadin.com/download">Vaadin Download
  158. page</a>.
  159. </p>
  160. <h3 id="package">Package Contents</h3>
  161. <p>Inside the ZIP installation package you will find:</p>
  162. <ul>
  163. <li>Separate server-side (<tt>vaadin-server</tt>) and
  164. client-side (<tt>vaadin-client</tt>, <tt>vaadin-client-compiler</tt>)
  165. development libraries
  166. </li>
  167. <li>Precompiled widget set (<tt>vaadin-client-compiled</tt>)
  168. for server-side development
  169. </li>
  170. <li>Shared library (<tt>vaadin-shared</tt>) for both
  171. server- and client-side libraries
  172. </li>
  173. <li>Valo theme (the only inbuilt theme) (<tt>vaadin-themes</tt>)
  174. </li>
  175. <li>Dependency libraries provided under the <tt>lib/</tt>
  176. folder
  177. </li>
  178. <li>Vaadin 7 compatible classes for server-side (<tt>vaadin-compatibility-server</tt>,
  179. <tt>vaadin-compatibility-shared</tt>), client-side (<tt>vaadin-compatibility-client</tt>) and themes (<tt>vaadin-compatibility-themes</tt>)
  180. </li>
  181. </ul>
  182. <p>
  183. See the
  184. <tt>README.TXT</tt>
  185. in the installation package for detailed information about
  186. the package contents.
  187. </p>
  188. <p>
  189. For server-side development, copy the
  190. <tt>vaadin-server</tt>
  191. ,
  192. <tt>vaadin-client-compiled</tt>
  193. ,
  194. <tt>vaadin-shared</tt>
  195. , and
  196. <tt>vaadin-themes</tt>
  197. from the main folder and the dependencies from the
  198. <tt>lib</tt>
  199. folder to the
  200. <tt>WEB-INF/lib</tt>
  201. folder of your Vaadin project. (The
  202. <tt>vaadin-client-compiled</tt>
  203. is necessary if you do not wish to compile the widget set by
  204. your own, which you need to do if you use almost any add-on
  205. components.)
  206. </p>
  207. <h2 id="migrating">Migrating from Vaadin Framework 7.7</h2>
  208. <p>
  209. Most Vaadin Framework 7 applications need some changes when migrating
  210. to Vaadin Framework 8. In addition to updating dependencies, all references to
  211. Framework 7 style data binding and components using it need to be
  212. updated either to use new Framework 8 style data binding or to use the
  213. compatibility versions in separate packages.
  214. </p>
  215. <p>
  216. Vaadin Framework 7 compatible versions of the old data binding API and
  217. components (with the exception of Form) are available in the package
  218. com.vaadin.v7 in modules vaadin-compatibility-server,
  219. vaadin-compatibility-shared etc. that can be used instead of
  220. vaadin-server, vaadin-shared etc. The package
  221. vaadin-compatibility-client-compiled contains the widgetset
  222. <tt>com.vaadin.v7.Vaadin7WidgetSet</tt> which can be used instead of
  223. <tt>DefaultWidgetSet</tt>. Please note that the rename to com.vaadin.v7
  224. has only been applied to classes that are only relevant for the
  225. compatibility modules. Some classes have also been renamed while still
  226. being part of the non-compatibility modules.
  227. </p>
  228. <p>
  229. All applications using either <tt>Reindeer</tt>, <tt>Runo</tt>, <tt>Chameleon</tt> or <tt>Base</tt> theme must include the <tt>vaadin-compability-themes</tt> package.
  230. </p>
  231. <p>
  232. There is a <a href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework8-migration-tool/">
  233. migration tool</a> which helps with some of the migration steps.
  234. </p>
  235. <p>
  236. Some Vaadin Framework 7 add-ons do not work in version 8 - please check the add-ons in <a
  237. href="http://vaadin.com/directory/">Vaadin Directory</a>
  238. for Framework version 8 support.
  239. </p>
  240. <h3 id="upgrading">Common Upgrade Steps</h3>
  241. <p>Always when upgrading from an earlier Vaadin Framework version, you
  242. must:</p>
  243. <ul>
  244. <li>Recompile your classes using the new Framework
  245. version. Binary compatibility is only guaranteed for
  246. maintenance releases of Framework.</li>
  247. <li>Unless using the precompiled widget set, recompile
  248. your widget set using the new Framework version.</li>
  249. </ul>
  250. <p>Remember also to refresh the project in your IDE to
  251. ensure that the new version of everything is in use.</p>
  252. <p>
  253. By using the "
  254. <tt>?debug</tt>
  255. " URL parameter, you can verify that the version of the
  256. servlet, the theme, and the widget set all match.
  257. </p>
  258. <p>
  259. <b>Eclipse</b> users should always check if there is a new
  260. version of the Eclipse Plug-in available.
  261. </p>
  262. <p>
  263. <b>Maven</b> users should update the Vaadin Framework dependency
  264. version in the
  265. <tt>pom.xml</tt>
  266. .
  267. </p>
  268. <h2 id="dependencies">Vaadin Framework @version@ Dependencies</h2>
  269. <p>When using Maven, Ivy, Gradle, or other dependency
  270. management system, all Framework dependencies are downloaded
  271. automatically. This is also the case when using the Vaadin
  272. Plugin for Eclipse.</p>
  273. <p>
  274. The Vaadin Framework ZIP installation package includes the
  275. dependencies in the
  276. <tt>lib</tt>
  277. subfolder. These need to be copied to the
  278. <tt>WEB-INF/lib</tt>
  279. folder of the web application that uses Vaadin Framework.
  280. </p>
  281. <p>
  282. The dependencies are listed in the <a href="license.html">Licensing
  283. description</a>. Some are explicit dependencies packaged and
  284. distributed as separate JARs, while some are included inside
  285. other libraries.
  286. </p>
  287. <h3>Bean Validation</h3>
  288. <p>
  289. If you use the bean validation feature, you need
  290. a Bean Validation API implementation. You need to install
  291. the implementation JAR in the
  292. <tt>WEB-INF/lib</tt>
  293. directory of the web application that uses validation.
  294. </p>
  295. <h2 id="supportedversions">Supported Technologies</h2>
  296. <p>
  297. Vaadin Framework 8 is compatible with <b>Java 8</b> and newer. Vaadin Framework
  298. 8 is especially supported on the following <b>operating
  299. systems</b>:
  300. </p>
  301. <ul>

  304. <li>Mac OS X</li>
  305. </ul>
  306. <p>
  307. Vaadin Framework 8 requires <b>Java Servlet API 3.0</b> but also
  308. supports later versions and should work with any Java
  309. application server that conforms to the standard. The
  310. following <b>application servers</b> are supported:
  311. </p>
  312. <ul id="supportedservers">
