  97. <h3 id="knownissues">Known Issues and Limitations</h3>
  98. <ul>
  99. <li><tt>@PushStateNavigation</tt> can cause browser to load resources from wrong URLs
  100. (<a href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework/issues/10329">#10329</a>)
  101. </li>
  102. <li>Drag'n'drop in a Table doesn't work on touch devices running
  103. Internet Explorer (Windows Phone, Surface)
  104. (<a href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework/issues/5170">#5170</a>)
  105. </li>
  106. <li>Payload based drop criteria do not work on IE11 - use criteria scripts if IE11 support of drop validation is required</li>
  107. <li>Specifying layout sizes using <tt>em</tt> is currently discouraged, because it results in fractional
  108. components sizes in many cases, which might cause unwanted 1px gaps between components.
  109. </li>
  110. <li>Up-to-date information about configuration needed for push and compatibility issues are available in
  111. <a href="https://vaadin.com/wiki/-/wiki/Main/Configuring+push+for+your+environment">this wiki page.</a>
  112. <br />
  113. The most prominent limitations are:
  114. <ul>
  115. <li>Push is currently not supported in portals (See <a
  116. href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework/issues/3741">#3741</a>)
  117. </li>
  118. <li>Transport mode WEBSOCKET does not support invalidating the session on Tomcat 7,
  119. nor setting cookies for the session. The new transport mode WEBSOCKET_XHR can be
  120. used to bypass these limitations.
  121. <br />
  122. See tickets <a href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework/issues/3911">#3911</a> and
  123. <a href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework/issues/3861">#3861</a>
  124. </li>
  125. </ul>
  126. </li>
  127. <li>The Maven GWT compilation for <tt>Vaadin7WidgetSet</tt> requires at least 1G of memory, when using the <tt>vaadin-client-compatibility</tt> package. If compiled inside Eclipse, possibly even more.</li>
  128. </ul>
  129. <h2 id="starting">Getting started with Vaadin Framework</h2>
  130. <p>
  131. <b>Vaadin Framework</b> is a Java framework for building modern web
  132. applications that look great, perform well and make you and
  133. your users happy. <b>The Framework</b> is available under the
  134. Apache License, Version 2.0 (see the
  135. <tt>license.html</tt>
  136. in the Vaadin Framework ZIP package).
  137. </p>
  138. <p>
  139. The easiest ways to start using <b>Vaadin Framework</b> are:
  140. </p>
  141. <ul>
  142. <li><strong>Maven dependency.</strong>If using Maven, define it as a dependency or use
  143. any of the available archetypes to create a new project. More information at
  144. <a href="https://vaadin.com/maven">https://vaadin.com/maven</a>
  145. </li>
  146. <li><strong>IDE Plugins.</strong>If using Eclipse, use the
  147. <a href="http://vaadin.com/eclipse">Vaadin Plugin for Eclipse</a>, which automatically
  148. downloads the Framework libraries. For NetBeans 8.0 and 7.4, use the
  149. <a href="http://plugins.netbeans.org/plugin/50531/vaadin-plug-in-for-netbeans">official Vaadin plugin</a>
  150. that provides Maven based wizards and code completion support for Vaadin Framework based development.
  151. </li>
  152. </ul>
  153. <p>
  154. Vaadin Framework is also available as a ZIP package downloadable from <a
  155. href="http://vaadin.com/download">Vaadin Download
  156. page</a>.
  157. </p>
  158. <h3 id="package">Package Contents</h3>
  159. <p>Inside the ZIP installation package you will find:</p>
  160. <ul>
  161. <li>Separate server-side (<tt>vaadin-server</tt>) and
  162. client-side (<tt>vaadin-client</tt>, <tt>vaadin-client-compiler</tt>)
  163. development libraries
  164. </li>
  165. <li>Precompiled widget set (<tt>vaadin-client-compiled</tt>)
  166. for server-side development
  167. </li>
  168. <li>Shared library (<tt>vaadin-shared</tt>) for both
  169. server- and client-side libraries
  170. </li>
  171. <li>Valo theme (the only inbuilt theme) (<tt>vaadin-themes</tt>)
  172. </li>
  173. <li>Dependency libraries provided under the <tt>lib/</tt>
  174. folder
  175. </li>
  176. <li>Vaadin 7 compatible classes for server-side (<tt>vaadin-compatibility-server</tt>,
  177. <tt>vaadin-compatibility-shared</tt>), client-side (<tt>vaadin-compatibility-client</tt>) and themes (<tt>vaadin-compatibility-themes</tt>)
  178. </li>
  179. </ul>
  180. <p>
  181. See the
  182. <tt>README.TXT</tt>
  183. in the installation package for detailed information about
  184. the package contents.
  185. </p>
  186. <p>
  187. For server-side development, copy the
  188. <tt>vaadin-server</tt>
  189. ,
  190. <tt>vaadin-client-compiled</tt>
  191. ,
  192. <tt>vaadin-shared</tt>
  193. , and
  194. <tt>vaadin-themes</tt>
  195. from the main folder and the dependencies from the
  196. <tt>lib</tt>
  197. folder to the
  198. <tt>WEB-INF/lib</tt>
  199. folder of your Vaadin project. (The
  200. <tt>vaadin-client-compiled</tt>
  201. is necessary if you do not wish to compile the widget set by
  202. your own, which you need to do if you use almost any add-on
  203. components.)
  204. </p>
  205. <h2 id="migrating">Migrating from Vaadin Framework 7.7</h2>
  206. <p>
  207. Most Vaadin Framework 7 applications need some changes when migrating
  208. to Vaadin Framework 8. In addition to updating dependencies, all references to
  209. Framework 7 style data binding and components using it need to be
  210. updated either to use new Framework 8 style data binding or to use the
  211. compatibility versions in separate packages.
  212. </p>
  213. <p>
  214. Vaadin Framework 7 compatible versions of the old data binding API and
  215. components (with the exception of Form) are available in the package
  216. com.vaadin.v7 in modules vaadin-compatibility-server,
  217. vaadin-compatibility-shared etc. that can be used instead of
  218. vaadin-server, vaadin-shared etc. The package
  219. vaadin-compatibility-client-compiled contains the widgetset
  220. <tt>com.vaadin.v7.Vaadin7WidgetSet</tt> which can be used instead of
  221. <tt>DefaultWidgetSet</tt>. Please note that the rename to com.vaadin.v7
  222. has only been applied to classes that are only relevant for the
  223. compatibility modules. Some classes have also been renamed while still
  224. being part of the non-compatibility modules.
  225. </p>
  226. <p>
  227. All applications using either <tt>Reindeer</tt>, <tt>Runo</tt>, <tt>Chameleon</tt> or <tt>Base</tt> theme must include the <tt>vaadin-compatibility-themes</tt> package.
  228. </p>
  229. <p>
  230. There is a <a href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework8-migration-tool/">
  231. migration tool</a> which helps with some of the migration steps.
  232. </p>
  233. <p>
  234. Some Vaadin Framework 7 add-ons do not work in version 8 - please check the add-ons in <a
  235. href="http://vaadin.com/directory/">Vaadin Directory</a>
  236. for Framework version 8 support.
  237. </p>
  238. <h3 id="upgrading">Common Upgrade Steps</h3>
  239. <p>Always when upgrading from an earlier Vaadin Framework version, you
  240. must:</p>
  241. <ul>
  242. <li>Recompile your classes using the new Framework
  243. version. Binary compatibility is only guaranteed for
  244. maintenance releases of Framework.</li>
  245. <li>Unless using the precompiled widget set, recompile
  246. your widget set using the new Framework version.</li>
  247. </ul>
  248. <p>Remember also to refresh the project in your IDE to
  249. ensure that the new version of everything is in use.</p>
  250. <p>
  251. By using the "
  252. <tt>?debug</tt>
  253. " URL parameter, you can verify that the version of the
  254. servlet, the theme, and the widget set all match.
  255. </p>
  256. <p>
  257. <b>Eclipse</b> users should always check if there is a new
  258. version of the Eclipse Plug-in available.
  259. </p>
  260. <p>
  261. <b>Maven</b> users should update the Vaadin Framework dependency
  262. version in the
  263. <tt>pom.xml</tt>
  264. .
  265. </p>
  266. <h2 id="dependencies">Vaadin Framework @version@ Dependencies</h2>
  267. <p>When using Maven, Ivy, Gradle, or other dependency
  268. management system, all Framework dependencies are downloaded
  269. automatically. This is also the case when using the Vaadin
  270. Plugin for Eclipse.</p>
  271. <p>
  272. The Vaadin Framework ZIP installation package includes the
  273. dependencies in the
  274. <tt>lib</tt>
  275. subfolder. These need to be copied to the
  276. <tt>WEB-INF/lib</tt>
  277. folder of the web application that uses Vaadin Framework.
  278. </p>
  279. <p>
  280. The dependencies are listed in the <a href="license.html">Licensing
  281. description</a>. Some are explicit dependencies packaged and
  282. distributed as separate JARs, while some are included inside
  283. other libraries.
  284. </p>
  285. <h3>Bean Validation</h3>
  286. <p>
  287. If you use the bean validation feature, you need
  288. a Bean Validation API implementation. You need to install
  289. the implementation JAR in the
  290. <tt>WEB-INF/lib</tt>
  291. directory of the web application that uses validation.
  292. </p>
  293. <h2 id="supportedversions">Supported Technologies</h2>
  294. <p>
  295. The server-side Vaadin Framework 8 is compatible with <b>Java 8 and 11</b>. Note, that the client-side Java code, compiled using GWT to be run as JS on the browser side, only supports language features up to Java 9 and a subset of JDK libraries.
  296. Vaadin Framework 8 is developed and tested with Oracle JDK, but other
  297. compliant Java distributions should work as well. More about Java support in <a href="https://vaadin.com/faq">
  298. FAQ</a>. Vaadin Framework
  299. 8 is especially supported on the following <b>operating
  300. systems</b>:
  301. </p>
  302. <ul>
  303. <li>Windows</li>
  304. <li>Linux</li>
  305. <li>Mac OS X</li>
  306. </ul>
  307. <p>
  308. Vaadin Framework 8 requires <b>Java Servlet API 3.0</b> but also
  309. supports later versions and should work with any Java
  310. application server that conforms to the standard. The
  311. following <b>application servers</b> are supported:
  312. </p>
