  95. <h3 id="knownissues">Known Issues and Limitations</h3>
  96. <ul>
  97. <li><tt>@PushStateNavigation</tt> can cause browser to load resources from wrong URLs
  98. (<a href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework/issues/10329">#10329</a>)
  99. </li>
  100. <li>Drag'n'drop in a Table doesn't work on touch devices running
  101. Internet Explorer (Windows Phone, Surface)
  102. (<a href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework/issues/5170">#5170</a>)
  103. </li>
  104. <li>Payload based drop criteria do not work on IE11 - use criteria scripts if IE11 support of drop validation is required</li>
  105. <li>Specifying layout sizes using <tt>em</tt> is currently discouraged, because it results in fractional
  106. components sizes in many cases, which might cause unwanted 1px gaps between components.
  107. </li>
  108. <li>Up-to-date information about configuration needed for push and compatibility issues are available in
  109. <a href="https://vaadin.com/wiki/-/wiki/Main/Configuring+push+for+your+environment">this wiki page.</a>
  110. <br />
  111. The most prominent limitations are:
  112. <ul>
  113. <li>Push is currently not supported in portals (See <a
  114. href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework/issues/3741">#3741</a>)
  115. </li>
  116. <li>Transport mode WEBSOCKET does not support invalidating the session on Tomcat 7,
  117. nor setting cookies for the session. The new transport mode WEBSOCKET_XHR can be
  118. used to bypass these limitations.
  119. <br />
  120. See tickets <a href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework/issues/3911">#3911</a> and
  121. <a href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework/issues/3861">#3861</a>
  122. </li>
  123. </ul>
  124. </li>
  125. <li>The Maven GWT compilation for <tt>Vaadin7WidgetSet</tt> requires at least 1G of memory, when using the <tt>vaadin-client-compatibility</tt> package. If compiled inside Eclipse, possibly even more.</li>
  126. </ul>
  127. <h2 id="starting">Getting started with Vaadin Framework</h2>
  128. <p>
  129. <b>Vaadin Framework</b> is a Java framework for building modern web
  130. applications that look great, perform well and make you and
  131. your users happy. <b>The Framework</b> is available under the
  132. Apache License, Version 2.0 (see the
  133. <tt>license.html</tt>
  134. in the Vaadin Framework ZIP package).
  135. </p>
  136. <p>
  137. The easiest ways to start using <b>Vaadin Framework</b> are:
  138. </p>
  139. <ul>
  140. <li><strong>Maven dependency.</strong>If using Maven, define it as a dependency or use
  141. any of the available archetypes to create a new project. More information at
  142. <a href="https://vaadin.com/maven">https://vaadin.com/maven</a>
  143. </li>
  144. <li><strong>IDE Plugins.</strong>If using Eclipse, use the
  145. <a href="http://vaadin.com/eclipse">Vaadin Plugin for Eclipse</a>, which automatically
  146. downloads the Framework libraries. For NetBeans 8.0 and 7.4, use the
  147. <a href="http://plugins.netbeans.org/plugin/50531/vaadin-plug-in-for-netbeans">official Vaadin plugin</a>
  148. that provides Maven based wizards and code completion support for Vaadin Framework based development.
  149. </li>
  150. </ul>
  151. <p>
  152. Vaadin Framework is also available as a ZIP package downloadable from <a
  153. href="http://vaadin.com/download">Vaadin Download
  154. page</a>.
  155. </p>
  156. <h3 id="package">Package Contents</h3>
  157. <p>Inside the ZIP installation package you will find:</p>
  158. <ul>
  159. <li>Separate server-side (<tt>vaadin-server</tt>) and
  160. client-side (<tt>vaadin-client</tt>, <tt>vaadin-client-compiler</tt>)
  161. development libraries
  162. </li>
  163. <li>Precompiled widget set (<tt>vaadin-client-compiled</tt>)
  164. for server-side development
  165. </li>
  166. <li>Shared library (<tt>vaadin-shared</tt>) for both
  167. server- and client-side libraries
  168. </li>
  169. <li>Valo theme (the only inbuilt theme) (<tt>vaadin-themes</tt>)
  170. </li>
  171. <li>Dependency libraries provided under the <tt>lib/</tt>
  172. folder
  173. </li>
  174. <li>Vaadin 7 compatible classes for server-side (<tt>vaadin-compatibility-server</tt>,
  175. <tt>vaadin-compatibility-shared</tt>), client-side (<tt>vaadin-compatibility-client</tt>) and themes (<tt>vaadin-compatibility-themes</tt>)
  176. </li>
  177. </ul>
  178. <p>
  179. See the
  180. <tt>README.TXT</tt>
  181. in the installation package for detailed information about
  182. the package contents.
  183. </p>
  184. <p>
  185. For server-side development, copy the
  186. <tt>vaadin-server</tt>
  187. ,
  188. <tt>vaadin-client-compiled</tt>
  189. ,
  190. <tt>vaadin-shared</tt>
  191. , and
  192. <tt>vaadin-themes</tt>
  193. from the main folder and the dependencies from the
  194. <tt>lib</tt>
  195. folder to the
  196. <tt>WEB-INF/lib</tt>
  197. folder of your Vaadin project. (The
  198. <tt>vaadin-client-compiled</tt>
  199. is necessary if you do not wish to compile the widget set by
  200. your own, which you need to do if you use almost any add-on
  201. components.)
  202. </p>
  203. <h2 id="migrating">Migrating from Vaadin Framework 7.7</h2>
  204. <p>
  205. Most Vaadin Framework 7 applications need some changes when migrating
  206. to Vaadin Framework 8. In addition to updating dependencies, all references to
  207. Framework 7 style data binding and components using it need to be
  208. updated either to use new Framework 8 style data binding or to use the
  209. compatibility versions in separate packages.
  210. </p>
  211. <p>
  212. Vaadin Framework 7 compatible versions of the old data binding API and
  213. components (with the exception of Form) are available in the package
  214. com.vaadin.v7 in modules vaadin-compatibility-server,
  215. vaadin-compatibility-shared etc. that can be used instead of
  216. vaadin-server, vaadin-shared etc. The package
  217. vaadin-compatibility-client-compiled contains the widgetset
  218. <tt>com.vaadin.v7.Vaadin7WidgetSet</tt> which can be used instead of
  219. <tt>DefaultWidgetSet</tt>. Please note that the rename to com.vaadin.v7
  220. has only been applied to classes that are only relevant for the
  221. compatibility modules. Some classes have also been renamed while still
  222. being part of the non-compatibility modules.
  223. </p>
  224. <p>
  225. All applications using either <tt>Reindeer</tt>, <tt>Runo</tt>, <tt>Chameleon</tt> or <tt>Base</tt> theme must include the <tt>vaadin-compatibility-themes</tt> package.
  226. </p>
  227. <p>
  228. There is a <a href="https://github.com/vaadin/framework8-migration-tool/">
  229. migration tool</a> which helps with some of the migration steps.
  230. </p>
  231. <p>
  232. Some Vaadin Framework 7 add-ons do not work in version 8 - please check the add-ons in <a
  233. href="http://vaadin.com/directory/">Vaadin Directory</a>
  234. for Framework version 8 support.
  235. </p>
  236. <h3 id="upgrading">Common Upgrade Steps</h3>
  237. <p>Always when upgrading from an earlier Vaadin Framework version, you
  238. must:</p>
  239. <ul>
  240. <li>Recompile your classes using the new Framework
  241. version. Binary compatibility is only guaranteed for
  242. maintenance releases of Framework.</li>
  243. <li>Unless using the precompiled widget set, recompile
  244. your widget set using the new Framework version.</li>
  245. </ul>
  246. <p>Remember also to refresh the project in your IDE to
  247. ensure that the new version of everything is in use.</p>
  248. <p>
  249. By using the "
  250. <tt>?debug</tt>
  251. " URL parameter, you can verify that the version of the
  252. servlet, the theme, and the widget set all match.
  253. </p>
  254. <p>
  255. <b>Eclipse</b> users should always check if there is a new
  256. version of the Eclipse Plug-in available.
  257. </p>
  258. <p>
  259. <b>Maven</b> users should update the Vaadin Framework dependency
  260. version in the
  261. <tt>pom.xml</tt>
  262. .
  263. </p>
  264. <h2 id="dependencies">Vaadin Framework @version@ Dependencies</h2>
  265. <p>When using Maven, Ivy, Gradle, or other dependency
  266. management system, all Framework dependencies are downloaded
  267. automatically. This is also the case when using the Vaadin
  268. Plugin for Eclipse.</p>
  269. <p>
  270. The Vaadin Framework ZIP installation package includes the
  271. dependencies in the
  272. <tt>lib</tt>
  273. subfolder. These need to be copied to the
  274. <tt>WEB-INF/lib</tt>
  275. folder of the web application that uses Vaadin Framework.
  276. </p>
  277. <p>
  278. The dependencies are listed in the <a href="license.html">Licensing
  279. description</a>. Some are explicit dependencies packaged and
  280. distributed as separate JARs, while some are included inside
  281. other libraries.
  282. </p>
  283. <h3>Bean Validation</h3>
  284. <p>
  285. If you use the bean validation feature, you need
  286. a Bean Validation API implementation. You need to install
  287. the implementation JAR in the
  288. <tt>WEB-INF/lib</tt>
  289. directory of the web application that uses validation.
  290. </p>
  291. <h2 id="supportedversions">Supported Technologies</h2>
  292. <p>
  293. Vaadin Framework 8 is compatible with <b>Java 8 and 9</b>. Vaadin Framework
  294. 8 is especially supported on the following <b>operating
