The huge change with adopting Java23 is that 1.1 > 1.7 Java are now considered unsupported
by Eclipse JDT, so the many thousands of tests we have that were specifying java versions
lower than 1.8 were all failing with an unsupported version error. All those tests have
had their versions bumped to 1.8.
That is why this commit includes so many changes. For
example where we were specifying 1.5 - which was the case for many many generics/annotations
tests, that is now 1.8. Also, some tests have been deleted because they make no sense now
(verifying expected errors on Java 1.4 for example, errors that just can’t happen with
minimum Java level 1.8).
The biggest impact to tests was when bumping above 1.4 compliance suddenly
there were 100s of adviceDidNotMatch messages. Some of these messages were actual indications
of bad expectations in the test but many of them were just to-be-expected and were fixed
either via an -Xlint:ignore option in the test spec or a SuppressAjWarnings in the test
source.
One or two tests actually revealed real bugs that just didn’t surface with lower
level java versions specified.
A bare minimum of real Java 23 tests have been added just
to get this sanity tested and committed. More would ideally be added.
Other notable changes due to Eclipse JDT changes:
org.aspectj.ajdt.core/src/org/aspectj/ajdt/internal/compiler/ast/*.java
Changes in here because there are now more validations on the code generator methods we were
calling. Now you can’t start manipulating variables without having declared them as proper
local variables, so those extra calls to define them have been added.
org.aspectj.ajdt.core/src/org/aspectj/org/eclipse/jdt/core/dom
With needing to bump up the java versions, these classes had to be brought up to date with
AST.JLS20 rather than only supporting versions 2/3. This was mostly copying patterns for
the Eclipse classes.

This was introduced in commit 8a4aa03845 of PR #278 contribution as part
of the #279 fix. The contributor thought that the generated closure
class entries were never used, but in fact AJDT class OSGiWeavingAdaptor
relies on the presence of those entries.
To the best of my present knowledge, it looks as if this change was the
root cause of https://github.com/eclipse-aspectj/ajdt/issues/57.
Therefore, I reverted it, simultaneously refactoring Iterator::remove
usage to delete entries from the map to Collection::removeIf.

Replace them by a uniform method 'isVMGreaterOrEqual(double)', also
overloaded for int.
This gets rid of one 'AspectJ_JDK_Update' tag. One less place to check
and update with each newly supported Java version. :-)

The generatedClasses map contained both keys of woven classes that had
generated classes associated with them, and the keys of the generated
classes themselves. It seems like this map is never consulted for the
generated class key - the generated class is generated from within the
context of woven class loading / retransformation, and thus no transform
event is generated for it by the JVM. Because of that, we do not need to
guard against re-weaving it. Other uses of generatedClasses map are for
full/empty tests, where the woven class key is sufficient. This change
simplifies deletion of a class because we do not have to look for its
associated generated classes.

WeavingAdaptor.couldWeave() tested two things: whether this specific
class (by its name) should be excluded from weaving, and whether the
class has generated classes associated with it (in which case we avoid
weaving to avoid re-creating those generated classes). However, if the
class has generated classes associated, couldWeave() is not called at
all because of the new wovenWithGeneratedClass() test, so we have
only the name test which is now called directly.

A parallel-capable class loader might load the same class multiple times
in multiple threads, see
https://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/technotes/guides/lang/cl-mt.html.
In this scenario, the JVM instrumentation mechanism invokes the AspectJ
weaver twice on the same class. In simple weaving scenarios, this would
just cause weaving logic to run multiple times and produce the same
result for each thread, but if the weaver is generating new classes,
it is undesirable to generate those classes multiple times.
To avoid this, the generatedClasses map in WeavingAdaptor keeps track of
classes for which inner classes were generated and avoids re-weaving
them. However, before this change, if a class was found in the generated
map, the weaver would return the un-woven bytes, which would cause
AspectJ not to work for some of the threads.
This change returns the woven bytes instead of re-running weaving.
Fixes #279.

This change makes sense independently of #277, but also enables using
- cp "my.jar;aspectjweaver.jar"
-XX:+AllowArchivingWithJavaAgent
-javaagent:aspectjweaver.jar
while creating a CDS archive. Afterward, the application can be run in
its woven state from the CDS archive even without '-javaagent', because
the byte code was archived in its woven state ("poor man's AJC"). See

for details.

The issue described in the Bugzilla issue is about 'declare @type', but
similar issues also existed for 'declare @field', 'declare @method',
'declare @constructor'. This fix is rather superficial and leaves
things to be desired, because it is rather hacky and simply ignores
errors source retention annotation declarations during weaving. A better
fix would drop the corresponding declarations while parsing and also
issue compiler warnings in each case.

I.e. the new caching optimisations are opt-in instead of opt-out as

be conservative and make the build green first.

compatibility, which was less than 100% even with all three flags
deactivated.

In our project we found out that during the build up of the spring context
the class loading takes a very long time.
Root cause is the huge amount of file I/O during pointcut class loading.
We are taking about ~250k file loads.
With these changes we managed to cut down the starting time by around 50%.
What we found out is that IMHO - the clear method of the ClassLoaderRepository
is called far too often -> in our settings this resulted in not a single cache
hit as the cache got cleared permanently.
Therefore we de-actived the cache clear calls inside the ClassLoaderRepository.
Secondly we changed the Java15AnnotationFinder in a way to not always create
new objects for the ClassLoaderRepository but re-use one static instance.
Otherwise we experienced >100k objects being created.
Last but not least we introduced a cache for unavailable classes so that
they do not have to be looked up using file I/O over and over again.
The whole behavior is configurable via

This involves replacing references in weaver application code as well as
a few tests.
In order to make AspectJ weaver + tools contain a relocated ASM version,
I added a Maven Shade relocation step after Maven Assembly created the
uber JARs. Relocation works for both binaries and sources and also
encompasses Class::forName calls like in class AsmDetector.

Keep only ASM 2.0 binary because it is still used in UnweavableTest
which uses an old ASM API, e.g. with a ClassWriter constructor which no
longer exists.
Also add JarJar 1.3 library because it is needed by an Ant task in
lib/asm/build.xml.
