There was a severe bug in CommitCommand which could corrupt
repos. When merging an annotated tag the JGit MergeCommand writes
correctly the ID of the tag (and not the id of the commit the tag was
pointing to) into MERGE_HEAD. Native git does the same. But
CommitCommand was reading this file and trusting blindly that it will
contain only IDs of commits. Then the CommitCommand created a
commit which has as parent a non-commit object (the tag object). That's
so corrupt that even native git gives up when you call "git log" in
such a repo.
To reproduce that with EGit simply right-click on a tag in the
Repository View and select Merge. The result was a corrupt repo!

Update the revert command and things relating to revert
Cherry-pick has been fixed, but even though revert does
basically the same thing, the fixes were not carried over here.
- Recognize the revert-states, analogous to the cherry picking states
- Make reset handle a revert-in-progress
- Update REVERT_HEAD and MERGE_MSG when revert fails due to conflicts
- Clear revert state on commit and reset
- Format the message similarily to how cherry-pick does. This is
not exactly how C Git does it.
The interface is still not the same as for cherry-picking.

A few classes such as Constanrs are marked with @SuppressWarnings, as are
toString() methods with many liternal, but otherwise $NLS-n$ is used for
string containing text that should not be translated. A few literals may
fall into the gray zone, but mostly I've tried to only tag the obvious
ones.

CommitCommand: Ensure unmerged paths are added correctly with setOnly
With bug 391855, PathEdit will be changed to apply an edit for each
stage. With that, CommitCommand would no longer work correctly when
committing an unmerged path.
This changes it to use a DirCacheBuilder which allows us to correctly
replace the entries for the three stages with one, which is not possible
with PathEdit.

toExternalString, equals and hashCode don't expect them to be null, so
explicitly disallow it in the constructor.
Also fix the documentation of setAuthor and setCommitter in
CommitCommand when specifying name and email as separate arguments.

Git API does not declare GitAPIException call() and related cleanups
All commands should throw a GitAPIException so new exceptions can be
added without breaking the builds of old code, i.e. anyone that calls
a Git API should catch GitAPIException and not just the currently known
exceptions.
Now the only checked exceptions on Git API calls are GitException and
subclasses of it. New checked exceptions that are subclasses of
GitException may be added without breaking the API.
Javadoc for GitAPIException is declared on GitCommand and
inherited to subclasses. JGitInternalException is not explicitly
documented anymore.
Unfortunately this change itself breaks the API. The intention is
that it shall be possible to add new checked subclasses of
GitAPIException without breaking the API.

Content length is computed and cached (short term) in the working
tree iterator when core.autocrlf is set.
Hopefully this is a cleaner fix than my previous attempt to make
autocrlf work.

Retain executable mode of existing files on Windows
Currently files in a repository marked as executable will have
that mode unset when modified and committed on systems that
do not support detection of this mode since the working tree
iterator will never report this mode for any entries.
This change updates WorkingTreeIterator to be able
to determine the target file mode to be used for the index
through consideration of the configured WorkingTreeOptions.

Add handling of CHERRY_PICK_HEAD file in .git (similar to MERGE_HEAD),
which is written in case of a conflicting cherry-pick merge.
It is used so that Repository.getRepositoryState can return the new
states CHERRY_PICKING and CHERRY_PICKING_RESOLVED. These states, as well
as CHERRY_PICK_HEAD can be used in EGit to properly show the merge tool.
Also, in case of a conflict, MERGE_MSG is written with the original
commit message and a "Conflicts" section appended. This way, the
cherry-picked message is not lost and can later be re-used in the commit
dialog.

Move commit and tag formatting to CommitBuilder, TagBuilder
These objects should be responsible for their own formatting,
rather than delegating it to some obtuse type called ObjectInserter.
While we are at it, simplify the way we insert these into a database.
Passing in the type and calling format in application code turned
out to be a huge mistake in terms of ease-of-use of the insert API.

Since these types no longer support reading, calling them a Builder
is a better description of what they do. They help the caller to
build a commit or a tag object.

The Commit class now only supports the creation of a commit object.
To read a commit, applictions should use RevCommit. This permits
us to have exactly one implementation, and RevCommit's is faster
and more bug-free.

Instead of creating the DirCache from a static factory method, use
an instance method on Repository, permitting the implementation to
override the method with a completely different type of DirCache
reading and writing. This would better support a repository in the
cloud strategy, or even just an in-memory unit test environment.

Update a number of calling sites of RevWalk to ensure the walker's
internal ObjectReader is released after the walk is no longer used.
Because the ObjectReader is likely to hold onto a native resource
like an Inflater, we don't want to leak them outside of their
useful scope.
Where possible we also try to share ObjectReaders across several
walk pools, or between a walker and a PackWriter. This permits
the ObjectReader to actually do some caching if it felt inclined
to do so.
Not everything was updated, we'll probably need to come back and
update even more call sites, but these are some of the biggest
offenders. Test cases in particular aren't updated. My plan is to
move most storage-agnostic tests onto some purely in-memory storage
solution that doesn't do compression.

Some types of repositories might not be stored on local disk. For
these, they will most likely return null for getDirectory() as the
java.io.File type cannot describe where their storage is, its not
in the host's filesystem.
Document that getDirectory() can return null now, and update all
current non-test callers in JGit that might run into problems on
such repositories. For the most part, just act like its bare.

Start using ObjectInserter instead of ObjectWriter
Some newer style APIs are updated to use the newer ObjectInserter
interface instead of the now deprecated ObjectWriter. In many of
the unit tests we don't bother to release the inserter, these are
typically using the file backend which doesn't need a release,
but in the future should use an in-memory HashMap based store,
which really wouldn't need it either.

The CommitCommand should take care to create a merge commit if the file
$GIT_DIR/MERGE_HEAD exists. It should then read the parents for the merge
commit out of this file. It should also take care that when commiting
a merge and no commit message was specified to read the message from
$GIT_DIR/MERGE_MSG.
Finally the CommitCommand should remove these files if the commit
succeeded.

The strings are externalized into the root resource bundles.
The resource bundles are stored under the new "resources" source
folder to get proper maven build.
Strings from tests are, in general, not externalized. Only in
cases where it was necessary to make the test pass the strings
were externalized. This was typically necessary in cases where
e.getMessage() was used in assert and the exception message was
slightly changed due to reuse of the externalized strings.

Add builder-style API to jgit and Commit & Log cmd
Added a new package org.eclipse.jgit.api and a builder-style API for
jgit. Added also the first implementation for two git commands: Commit
and Log.
This API is intended to be used by external components when
functionalities of the standard git commands are required. It will also
help to ease writing JGit tests.
For internal usages this API may often not be optimal because the git
commands are doing much more than required or they expect parameters of
an unappropriate type.
